Introduction to Access Points

An Access Point (AP) is a networking device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi technology.

Access Points are commonly used in homes, offices, schools, hospitals and public places where wireless connectivity is required.

What is an Access Point?

An Access Point acts as a bridge between wireless devices and a wired network.

Devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets connect wirelessly to the Access Point and gain access to network resources and the Internet.

Functions of an Access Point

Access Point vs Router

Access Point Router
Provides Wi-Fi access Connects networks
Extends wireless coverage Routes traffic between networks
Requires a router in most networks Can operate independently

Access Point vs Switch

Access Point Switch
Wireless Connectivity Wired Connectivity
Supports Wi-Fi Devices Supports Ethernet Devices
Uses Radio Signals Uses Network Cables

Wireless Standards

Wireless communication follows IEEE 802.11 standards.

Newer standards provide higher speeds and better performance.

SSID

SSID stands for Service Set Identifier.

The SSID is the name of a wireless network.

Example: DigitalTech-WiFi

Wireless Security

Wireless networks should be protected against unauthorized access.

Recommended security methods:

Access Point Installation

Basic installation steps:

  1. Connect the Access Point to a switch or router.
  2. Power on the device.
  3. Access the management interface.
  4. Configure SSID and security settings.
  5. Test wireless connectivity.

Access Point Configuration

Typical configuration includes:

Troubleshooting Access Points

No Wi-Fi Signal

Slow Internet

Cannot Connect

Practical Example

A school has one router and three Access Points.

Each Access Point provides wireless connectivity to students in different classrooms.

This improves coverage and allows more users to connect simultaneously.
